Arborist is a general adjective that describes someone that cares for trees. Wikipedia has a very extensive definition and description which will give a consumer a better understanding of the complexity of the field of Arboriculture.
There are many types of arborists and we are diverse in our perspectives, knowledge base, and general talents.
Definition from Wikipedia:
An arborist, or (less commonly) arboriculturist, is a professional in the practice of arboriculture, which is the cultivation, management, and study of individual trees, shrubs, vines, and other perennial woody plants. Arborists generally focus on the health and safety of individual plants and trees, rather than managing forests (the domains of Forestry and Silviculture) or harvesting wood. An arborist's scope of work is therefore distinct from that of either a forester or a logger, though the professions share much in common.
An arborist's focus is different than that of a consulting arborist as defined below:
Consulting arborist – Individuals that focus solely on consulting. Often they have specialized tools and knowledge to determine if a tree is hazardous or general health of a tree. These tools can range from equipment that can give a person a visual perspective of the inside of a tree to measuring the health of an individual leaf.
Below are common services offered by a consulting arborist:
- Health and risk assessment
- Permits, plans, reports
- Vegetation inventory
- Construction and infrastructure
- Trees appraisals
- Expert witness in litigation
- Specialty projects
- Training, research, education
